'...and flights of Angels sing thee to thy rest'

This is a sad day, at the end of what was not a good week for this wonderful business. On Thursday, Bernie Brillstein, who evolved from a Mail-room minion at the William Morris agency in 1956 into one of the most powerful and respected figures in the industry, died of heart disease at 77. After forming his own agency he segued into the field of Producing and was a key player in highly successful projects such as Ghostbusters, SNL and The Muppets.

Yesterday the news broke that Bernie Mac had lost his fight with pneumonia and moved on. Best known for the splendid casino heist movie, "Ocean's Eleven," and his Peabody Award-winning, "The Bernie Mac Show," Bernie was only 50-years old.

And today we hear that Paul Newman has completed a series of treatments and left the hospital in New York. I only wish this could foretell a return to public life for this splendidly talented and universally loved man, but the fact is that he's been advised by his Doctors that his cancer is now beyond the reach of medicine and he has only weeks to live, and he's decided he wants to die at home.

His only public statement on the issue; That he is 'doing nicely.'

I ask you all to spare a thought for this wonderful man, and quite irreplaceable Actor. Brevity, as Wilde observed, is the soul of wit. When blended with such stoic and understated spirit it is the empiric validation of a depth of courage, humanity and unassuming character we would be greatly blessed to ever witness again.
