I've seen the future - And it's thumb-size!

If you're as inclined to periods of Geek-ness as me, here's a story that should leave your Nike's positively sauteing in drool: Argos, a large chain of retail stores in England, have just started selling the 1984 Bill Murray classic, Ghostbusters.

...On a USB stick.

Made by PNY, the 2GB flash-drive will work with Windoze, Macs and Linux and has enough capacity for twelve hours of video, almost 36 hours of music and over 1,000 pictures - in addition to the full-length movie!

Excuse me while I mop my chin...

Both PNY and the film's owners, Sony Pictures, are being cagey about the technical details but we do know the movie is encoded with a form of DRM, so you have to have it physically plugged into the PC to watch the film. But the implicit potential is enough to keep most of our tech-loving, basement dwelling friends in a state of transcendent contemplation for hours.

Physical media like DVD's are a wonderful format and a huge advance after the boundless drawbacks and gnat-like lifespan of VHS, but the decision to commit to the reality of movie distribution via USB is inspired! - You can't wear them out, they'll never get scratched, your kids can't use your Star Wars collection as Frisbees, and you can carry an entire weekend's entertainment home from Blockbuster in a T-shirt pocket. Genius!

Here's the link. Be the first on your block - Find a couch and some popcorn and take a trip to the future!...
