Is the Big Cat Coming Home?

In keeping with yesterday's post, today we hear the rather harmonious - and very welcome - news that MGM may soon be restored to its rightful position as an American company.

Currently owned by an investment group headed by Sony Pictures, the rumors [and sadly, that's all they currently are] suggest the highly-regarded fiscal wizard, Mr. Kirk Kerkorian may be considering a $3-billion offer to restore MGM to domestic ownership.

Sony and their friends bought the Studio for $5-billion in 2004, but box office returns have hardly set any records and recent appraisals value MGM at just what Mr Kerkorian is [allegedly] planning to offer. And the timing is ideal - With around $500M in the 'kitty', MGM has enough to finance their slate for about another year, then they'll need new capital. And it probably won't be home-grown.

The prospect is enough to give even the most nonchalant movie fan goose-bumps! To have this historic studio, with its irreplaceable catalog and legendary stars safely back in American hands would be a splendid achievement for Mr. Kerkorian, and just cause for the rest of us to enjoy acres of fireworks, ticker-tape parades and a cake more spacious than Kirstie Alley's butt!

Keep your eyes open, folks. If this glorious event truly happens the resulting patriotic fervor should see Old Glory fluttering from every pole in the nation for years! For once, an American icon would be removed from foreign hands and restored to its rightful home.

And that's truly something to celebrate!
