Well, I hope you all had a joyful, barbecue-enhanced Labor Day? Did anyone catch Jerry Lewis performing his annual feats for Jerry's Kids? It was remarkable. No....More than that. In this economy it was little short of miraculous!
This year, the show also urged viewers to help over 5,000 MDA members who are caught in the turmoil of Hurricane Gustav. Ed McMahon, Tony Orlando, Celine Dion and Reba McEntire all pitched in to give Jerry a hand - And the viewers [God bless them!] responded in droves!
Yesterday's Telethon raised $65-million for Jerry's annual drive to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He told reporters that every year he doesn't dare even hope he could beat last year's total. And every year he's been wrong. To date, the 2008 show is ahead of '07 by $1.2-million - and the cash is still pouring in.
This almost beggars belief. Foreclosures are decimating whole towns like a virus, gas is $5 a pint and thousands of hard-working folk live in mortal fear of losing their jobs...Yet people still find it possible to dig into savings they don't really have, to help people they've never even met.
The power and capacity of the Entertainment industry when focused on an altruistic goal like Jerry's Kids is astounding...So could someone please explain why we still tolerate vacuous, self-absorbed insects like Paris ??
