Segueing neatly from yesterday's story we have an example of a Celebrity willing to lend both their high-profile weight and their hard-earned cash to a cause others might only claim to believe in:Brad Pitt is donating $100,000 to help defeat California's "Proposition 8," a ballot initiative that would remove the right of same-sex couples to marry; A right deserved by and denied them for decades, and which they were only recently given.
"Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," he said, in a characteristically eloquent statement.
Mr. Pitt's donation is the largest so far from an A-list celebrity. It's tempting, therefore, to wonder when those more entwined with the cause, like Ms. Degeneres and Sir Elton would care to assist?
Proposition 8 is a cruel and unconscionable attack on the rights and freedoms of an already segmented section of California society, and seems intended to prove to the world that the liberties so long and vociferously treasured by those in charge of this country are callously regarded by the same elected custodians as the exclusive prerogative of everyone else.
The phrase, 'All men are created equal.' comprises part of a speech that stands among the most significant political statements in modern history, and it's as valid today as it was on that chilly New York morning in 1829 - Every man and woman in this wondrous nation is, and should be treated as equal. Even if they love each other.
